Keys to the Game
Key sequence Dartmouth trailed by double digits with less than four minutes left in regulation and still was on the short end of a 53-48 score with a minute to play, but a late rally would send the game into overtime. Marlon Sanders drew a foul with 59 seconds on the clock and hit both free throws, then came up with a big steal and took it the other way for a layup. New Hampshire’s Tyrece Gibbs missed from in close, but Mike Christensen grabbed the offensive board and was fouled. Christensen missed his first free throw, but nailed the second to make it 54-52 with 21 ticks left. DeVon Mosley attempted to put the Big Green in front with a three-pointer with 10 seconds on the clock, but it was off the mark. The rebound went out of bounds to Dartmouth, and Sanders fed Alex Barnett for the game-tying jumper in the final seconds of regulation to necessitate the extra session.
Key sign it was over Sanders knotted the game at 59 all with a jumper at the 1:43 mark of overtime, then John Ball put the visitors in front with a layup on the Big Green’s next possession. Gibbs was fouled, but hit just one of two at the line, so Dartmouth still led by one with the ball and less than a minute to play. Dan DiLiegro came up with a steal, but Biggs turned it back over with 26 seconds remaining. With the shot clock off, UNH was forced to foul Mosley, who convreted both free throws. Alvin Abreu missed a layup with 10 seconds left, and Mosley and Barnett each missed attempts to put away the game from close range before Mosley again drew the foul and iced the game with a pair of free throws to put Dartmouth up 65-60 with three seconds left.
Key performance Sanders came up big down the stretch for Dartmouth, finishing with 10 points and three assists in 42 minutes with just one turnover.
Key statistic The Wildcats hurt themselves badly with 14-for-25 shooting (56.0 percent) from the free throw line, allowing the Big Green to match their scoring output from the stripe on seven fewer attempts.
