Keys to the Game
Key sequence After a Cameron Lewis backdoor pass to Aron Cohen gave Penn a 35-30 lead with 17:17 left in the game, La Salle launched an 11-0 run and took the lead for good. Reserve Darryl Partin’s layup with 13:13 made it 41-35 with 13:13 left. Penn’s Conor Turley hit a three-pointer on the Quakers’ ensuing possession, but Partin answered right back with a three of his own to make it 44-38.
Key sign it was over A Brian Grandieri layup cut La Salle’s lead to 59-58 with 31 seconds remaining. Grandieri fouled Yves Mekongo Mbala with 30 seconds left, and the sophomore guard made both free throws. After Penn raced down the floor and got a timeout with 17 seconds left, the resulting play resulted in an open look from three-point range by Justin Reilly directly in front of the Penn bench. However, Reilly missed the shot, Mekongo Mbala got the rebound, Tyler Bernardini fouled him with four seconds on the clock, and Mekongo Mbala made one of two free throws to put things beyond reach.
Key performance Kimmani Barrett had a big game off the bench for La Salle, finishing with 15 points and nine rebounds — four offensive — in 29 minutes.
Key statistic The Explorers got to the line frequently and shot well there, knocking down 25 of their 30 free throw attempts. The Quakers had done a solid job of drawing fouls this season, but on the night they went to the line just 15 times, making 10 of those — resulting in a 15-point disadvantage from the stripe.
Notes

– Bernardini’s 20 points were a game high for Penn and he added six rebounds, an assist, a block and two steals, while Grandieri finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.

– Rodney Green led La Salle with 17 points largely on the strength of 9-for-10 free throw shooting, but committed five turnovers.

– The two teams combined to miss their first 15 field goal attempts in the game. Reilly scored non-free throw points of the game with a layup at the 15:20 mark of the first half, then Barrett scored the Explorers’ first field goal with a layup on the ensuing possession.

– Penn’s defense, which came into the game ranked 270th in Division I in efficiency, put in its best performance of the season against the Explorers’ top three scoring threats. Jerrell Williams, Green, and Darnell Harris combined to make only eight of 33 field goal attempts.

– With Harrison Gaines in street clothes due to a tweaked hamstring, Cohen got the call to start at point guard once again. But after some shaky performances earlier in the season, the junior did not commit any turnovers against La Salle and dished out six assists.

– Penn will return to action on Saturday night, when St. Joseph’s comes down the Schuylkill Expressway for the annual Big 5 Hall of Fame Game at The Palestra. Former Quakers star James “Booney” Salters is among the inductees in this year’s class, which will be honored at halftime of the 7:30 pm ET tipoff.
