Keys to the Game |
Key sequence |
The game started as a defensive battle, with the two teams tied at 4-4 six minutes in. However, Cornell would hold NJIT to just one field goal over a period that stretched over 11 minutes, and would pull away during that span. The Highlanders’ only points during this span came on a Kraig Peters three-pointer that pulled the home team within 15-7 at the 7:36 mark of the first half. The Big Red would score the next next six points to take a commanding 21-7 lead.

Key sign it was over |
It probably was over when NJIT scored nine first-half points and trailed by 15 at halftime, but Cornell removed all doubt with an 11-2 run in the second half. It was 34-14 prior to this run, and when Geoff Reeves sank a three-pointer at the 11:02 mark, the Big Red found itself in front 47-16.

Key performance |
Jeff Foote was the only double-figure scorer for Cornell with 10 points on 4-for-6 shooting and also pulled down three rebounds and handed out three assists to go with a block in 23 minutes off the bench.
|
Key statistic |
NJIT shot just 8 of 40 (20.0 percent) on the evening, while Cornell was significantly better in that department at 24 of 56 (42.9 percent).

Notes
– Ryan Wittman and Louis Dale both had uncharacteristically poor shooting games, combining for just nine points on 3 of 13 shooting — including 1 of 6 from three.
– Peters led NJIT with 10 points, albeit on 2-for-10 shooting to go with six turnovers.
– The Big Red shot just 6 of 19 (31.6 percent) from the outside as a team.
– The Highlanders posted a meager five assists against a whopping 26 turnovers.
– Cornell opens Ivy play when Columbia visits Ithaca on Saturday, January 19, at 3:00 pm ET.
