Keys to the Game
Key sequence Princeton held a 6-5 lead nearly seven minutes in, when Evansville ripped off 17 unanswered points to take control of the game. A Shy Ely jumper put the Purple Aces in front for good, and two possessions later, Kavon Lacey drilled a three-pointer. The Tigers had three chances to get back within a single point, but three-pointers by Matt Sargeant, Kyle Koncz, and Noah Savage all missed the mark, and finally Pieter van Tongeren scored a bucket and Kevin Steurer was called for a foul off the ball. Given the ball out of bounds, Jason Holsinger connected from beyond the arc to mak it 15-6. Alex Okafor missed twice on subsequent Princeton possessions, while Ely got inside for a layup and Holsinger struck again from long range. Following two more Tiger misfires the next trip down the court, Ely nailed a jumper to cap off the 17-0 run, leaving Princeton in a 22-6 hole with 7:24 to play in the first half.
Key sign it was over Princeton trailed 43-27 after a Mike Strittmatter layup with 8:12 left to play, but the Tigers wouldn’t score their next basket for over four minutes, as Evansville used an 8-1 run to put away the game. When Jay Couisnard scored inside, drew a foul on Savage, and converted the conventional three-point play, the Purple Aces held an insurmountable 51-28 lead with just 4:31 remaining.
Key performance Ely tied for high scoring honors with 12 points on 6-for-11 shooting for Evansville, and added a game-best eight rebounds in 36 minutes.
Key statistic Princeton made just three of the mere 12 three-pointers (25.0 percent) it attempted against a team that had been giving up threes by the truckload coming into the game. The Tigers weren’t any more effective inside the arc, where they shot a frigid 10 of 27 (37.0 percent).
