Keys to the Game
Key sequence Cornell clamped down defensively late in the first half, holding Binghamton scoreless over the final 3:45 before halftime and scoring the final 11 points. The Big Red held a slim 32-20 advantage, but Adam Gore was fouled shooting a three-pointer and converted all three attempts at the line. Brian Kreefer added a bucket inside on the next possession, then Gore tacked on two more free throws. A Louis Dale lay up gave Cornell a double-digit lead, and two Collin Robinson free throws with 1:02 to play finished off the first-half scoring, with the Big Red suddenly leading 43-30.
Key sign it was over Binghamton drew within eight on a three-pointer with 36 seconds left in the contest, but the Bearcats took 18 seconds to foul, and Ryan Wittman eventually got one of two at the line. Reggie Fuller dunked to make it 70-63, but only 13 seconds remained. When Louis Dale hit both free throws, Devon McBride’s three-pointer only cut the Big Red’s advantage to six, allowing Gore to ice the game with a free throw with four ticks left.
Key performance Robinson came off the bench for Steve Donahue to score 16 points in 26 minutes. The sophomore transfer shot 6 of 11 from the floor and added three rebounds, an assist, and two steals.
Key statistic Binghamton actually outscored Cornell 61-59 from the field, so the Big Red’s advantage at the free throw line proved decisive. Cornell doubled up Binghamton in both attempts (18 to nine) and points at the line (14 to seven).
