Keys to the Game
Key sequence Down three with under 90 seconds to play, Brown got a layup from Mark McAndrew to pull within one. The Bears got the defensive stop they needed when Wagner’s Mark Porter misfired and Chris Skrelja controlled the rebound. Brown patiently worked the shot clock under five seconds before McAndrew drew a foul. The senior drained both free throws with 26 ticks on the clock to put the home team in the lead, 63-62. The Seahawks then ran the clock inside of 10 seconds before Porter drew a foul on Damon Huffman.
Key sign it was over Porter went to the line with 6.7 seconds left and coolly knocked down both attempts to put Wagner back on top by one. Brown brought the ball upcourt and called timeout with three seconds remaining. Huffman got off a leaning three-pointer at the buzzer that wouldn’t fall, as Wagner left Providence with the narrow victory.
Key performance Porter’s 23 points were the most among all players — but it was his two pressure free throws in the final seconds that proved to be the winning margin. The Seahawk guard also added five rebounds, four assists, a block, and two steals while playing all 40 minutes.
Key statistic Brown had a very uncharacteristically poor night shooting the three, finishing just 3 of 21 from outside the arc as a team. Huffman missed all six of his attempts from long range, while McAndrew made just 1 of 4.
Notes

– Skrelja was the high point man for Brown with 21 on perfect 7-for-7 shooting. He took — and made — his first three-pointer of the season. Mark MacDonald (12 points) and McAndrew (14 points) were the other Bears in double figures.

– Durell Vinson proved to be a force in the middle for Wagner, finishing with 12 points and a whopping 18 rebounds. Seahawk three-point threat Joey Mundweiler went just 2 of 12 from outside the arc.

– Brown also had a strangely poor shooting night at the line, where it normally excels. The Bears were just 14 of 23 (60.9 percent) from the stripe on the evening.

– The Seahawks got the better of the boards, grabbing 33.3 percent offensively while holding the Bears to just 13.9 percent. Bizarrely, Brown somehow managed to outscore Wagner 8-6 on second-chance points.

– The game was a wild back-and-forth affair, complete with 11 ties and 18 lead changes.

– Brown will look to get back on track when it plays host to UC Davis on Saturday, December 1, at 7:00 pm ET.
