Keys to the Game
Key sequence Trailing 65-57 with 5:52 to play and in jeopardy of losing touch with the visitors, Dartmouth went on a 12-2 run to take a 69-67 lead — its first of the second half. Alex Barnett got the run started with a jumper in the paint, and DeVon Mosley followed with a three-pointer to make it 65-62. At the other end, Barnett blocked back-to-back shots to keep the Catamounts at bay. Elgin Fitzgerald then drained a couple of free throws to pull Dartmouth within 65-64. After a UVM hoop, Mosley nailed a jumper and Michael Giovacchini hit a triple to give the Big Green the lead and get the crowd of 1,127 back into the game.
Key sign it was over Nick Vier stepped to the line for two shots with 20 seconds remaining and his team leading by one point. He missed both attempts, with teammate Kyle Cieplicki rebounding the second, but an offensive foul was called on Vermont’s Marqus Blakely, giving the ball to Dartmouth with 15 seconds to play. With 7.6 seconds left, Big Green guard Robbie Pride came unaccountably open down the lane for a left-handed layup and the eventual winning points. The Catamounts’ final hopes disappeared when Mike Trimboli was called for a charge down low with two seconds left.
Key performance Barnett had a monster game for Dartmouth with a career-high 25 points, 11 rebounds, and a career-best six blocks.
Key statistic Dartmouth got 20 points from its bench, including eight by Giovacchini and six from Fitzgerald.
Notes

– Mosley had 17 points and four steals for Dartmouth.

– Blakely led the way for Vermont with 23 points, largely a result of his 13-for-17 night at the free throw line.

– For the first time this season, Dartmouth used a starting lineup for the second time. Sophomore Brandon Ware started at the point and recorded a career-best five assists. Seven-foot freshman John Marciano got his second career start, and scored five of the Big Green’s first seven points before being sidelined with foul trouble, finishing with career highs of eight points and four rebounds.

– Johnathan Ball did not play, as he was held out to help heal up a variety of bumps and bruises.

– The Big Green hadn’t beaten Vermont in eight tries, going back to December 18, 1998.

– Dartmouth will look for a third straight win when it travels to winless Stony Brook on Saturday, December 1, for a 2:00 pm ET tipoff.
