Key sequence Alex Zampier’s three-pointer tied things up at 17 apiece with 8:44 to play before halftime, but top-ranked UCLA slapped a quick 14-0 run on Yale that changed the complexion of the game. It started innocently enough with a Kevin Love bucket, and a free throw by the freshman big man on the next Bruin possession. Josh Shipp’s three made it a six-point game, and a layup by Luc Richard Mbah a Moute and a steal and dunk by Russell Westbrook suddenly put the Bulldogs in a double-digit hole. After a Lorenza Mata-Real free throw, Chace Stanback drilled a three-pointer that made it 34-17 at the 2:26 mark. Yale wouldn’t get closer than 13 points the rest of the way.
Key sign it was over A comfortable lead for UCLA turned into a rout when the Bruins reeled off 10 unanswered points midway through the second half. Nikola Dragovic’s three made it a 20-point game, then Love dunked and tacked on a free throw for a three-point play. Two more Love free throws and a Josh Shipp layup made it 58-31 and extinguished any Bulldog hopes of knocking off the number-one team in the land.
Key performance Mbah a Moute finished with 14 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, a block, and two steals in 30 minutes of action.
Key statistic Yale shot 20 of 57 (35.1 percent) on the night, while UCLA was 29 of 53 (54.7 percent).
Notes

– Matt Kyle was the only Yale player in double figures with 10 points, though he once again was limited by foul trouble, logging just 15 minutes on the evening.

– Love and Westbrook tied for the game’s high-scoring honors with 15 each.

– Yale only lost the turnover battle 15-12, but was outscored 21-10 in points off turnovers.

– The Bruins made good use of the fastbreak, outscoring the Bulldogs 18-2 on the break.

– UCLA attempted 23 free throws to just four for Yale.

– The Bulldogs fly back east now, but they’ll stay on the road for a game against undefeated Holy Cross on Wednesday, November 28, at 7:00 pm ET.
