Keys to the Game
Key sequence The lead had see-sawed back and forth, but Navy was ahead by a point after two Chirs Harris free throws with 3:14 remaining. A long two-point jumper by Tyler Bernardini gave Penn the lead, 56-55. Jack Eggleston then came up with the steal and made a nice move resulting in a transition layup to put the Quakers up three. Then a Brian Grandieri steal led to a Bernardini fastbreak layup and Penn suddenly had a five-point advantage.
Key sign it was over Penn had missed three of its previous four free throws to leave Navy a glimmer of hope, trailing by six with under five seconds remaining. However, the Midshipmen’s chances went from slim to none when Eggleston hit his final free throw to make it a three-possession game.
Key performance Grandieri finished with a game-high 18 points on 5-for-9 shooting and 8 of 10 at the line. He also grabbed nine rebounds and dished out three assists.
Key statistic Navy’s aggressive defense resulted in 32 total fouls as a team, sending Penn to the line 42 times, with the Quakers making 30 of those (71.4 percent). Compare that to Navy’s 18-of-23 performance at the line.
Notes

– Greg Sprink registered a game-high 22 points to go with seven
rebounds, three assists and a steal. However, the senior shot just 6-for-24 from the field
(25.0 percent) and was cold from the outside at 2 of 12 (16.7 percent).

– Glen Miller started three freshmen, with Bernardini (15 points) and Gaines (12 points) enjoying good offensive nights.

– Penn opened the game by hitting just 2 of its first 15 shots, but the Quakers were 17 of 31 (54.8 percent) after that.

– The assist-turnover differentials were unsightly for both teams, with Penn at 9-22 and Navy checking in at 8-18, though the Midshipmen outscored the Quakers 27-15 in points off turnovers.

– Penn will face another Patriot league team in its next game, traveling to Easton, PA, to face Lafayette on Wednesday, November 28, at 7:00 pm ET. Navy will travel to Washington, DC, on the same night to face fellow Philly Classic participant Howard at 7:00 pm ET.
