Keys to the Game
Key sequence Virginia held Penn without a field goal until a jumpshot by Brian Grandieri five minutes and 36 seconds into the game to make the score 14-5 in the Cavaliers’ favor. After a Jamil Tucker three-pointer on Virginia’s next possession, the lead would remain in double digits for the rest of the night.
Key sign it was over A three-pointer by Andreas Schreiber cut Virginia’s lead to 71-58 with 10:36 left in the game, but the Cavaliers scored seven of the game’s next nine points. The mini-run was punctuated by a three-pointer from Virginia forward Adrian Adrian Joseph at the 9:13 mark that pushed the margin back out to 78-60.
Key performance With star Virginia guard Sean Singletary held relatively in check, Joseph stepped up. He scored 23 points on 7-of-14 shooting, including 5-of-7 from three-point range. Joseph also pulled down 11 rebounds, including five on the offensive end.
Key statistic Virginia absolutely manhandled Penn on the boards, grabbing 25 offensive rebounds to just 17 Quaker defensive rebounds (59.5 percent). The Cavaliers limited Penn to 9-of-40 rebounding (22.5 percent) at its offensive end and had a massive 29-13 edge in second-chance points.
Notes

– Freshman guard Remy Cofield had a breakout game for Penn, leading the Quakers with 20 points in just 19 minutes. He made six of eight field goal attempts and one of two three-point attempts, while converting seven of ten free throws.

– Cofield’s classmate and backcourt-mate, Harrison Gaines, had another strong performance. Gaines scored 12 points, of which eight came from the free throw line. The California native also dished out eight assists.

– Penn made only six of 21 three-point attempts, with Schreiber’s 1-of-5 the most glaring.

– Though he got by far the loudest ovation of the night when his name was announced during the starting lineups, the Philadelphia native Singletary had a relatively quiet game. His 16 points included seven free throws and only one three-pointer, while his four assists were countered by five turnovers.

– Former Penn forward Ryan Pettinella scored six points from three interior baskets in his return to The Palestra, but his night was noted most for two missed free throws which drew cheers from the Quakers fans in attendance.

– Penn faces Navy in the final game of the Philly Classic on Saturday, November 24, at 7:00 pm ET on CN8.
