Keys to the Game
Key sequence Columbia had lead nearly all the way until an 8-0 run early in the second half put Long Island in front to stay. Jaytornah Wisseh got it started for the Blackbirds with a layup, the Kellen Allen’s putback gave the hosts a three-point lead. David Hicks found Allen inside for another layup, then after two fruitless possessions for each team, Kyle Johnson added two free throws to make it 46-39 in Long Island’s favor with 13:29 to play.
Key sign it was over Niko Scott’s three-pointer at the 1:44 mark drew the Lions back to within seven, but Eugene Kotorobai responded in kind with a three just ahead of the shot clock expiration. When Brett Loscalzo couldn’t follow suit, Wisseh hit one of two at the line to make it 68-57 with under a minute left. John Baumann’s long-range bomb gave Columbia a sliver of hope, but two Johnson free throws finished off the Lions.
Key performance Allen came off the bench for LIU to score a game-high 19 points and grab nine boards in just 22 minutes.
Key statistic The officials put the Blackbirds on the line 36 times, compared to just nine for the Lions. Columbia was outscored 27-6 from the stripe, which pretty much determined the outcome of the game.
Notes

– Four Columbia starters finished with four fouls, including Baumann, who was limited to just 20 minutes due to foul problems.

– The Lions committed a respectable 13 turnovers, but forced only nine, leading to a 14-8 advantage for Long Island in points off turnovers.

– Offensive rebounds were relatively even, but the Blackbirds did a much better job of capitalizing on those additional opportunities, outscoring the Lions 15-4 in second-chance points.

– Columbia will look to halt its three-game skid on Saturday, November 24, when it travels out on Long Island to take on Stony Brook in a 2:00 pm ET contest.
