Keys to the Game
Key sequence After The Citadel’s Demetrius Nelson completed a conventional three-point play to cut Penn’s lead to 51-41 with 17:16 left in the game, a Tyler Bernardini three-pointer on the ensuing possession launched a 15-2 run Quakers over the next 3:22. Bernardini also finished the run with a three-point play, hitting a layup on a fastbreak bounce pass from Harrison Gaines and converting the free throw after being fouled on the attempt to give Penn a commanding 66-43 advantage.
Key sign it was over After Glen Miller called a timeout with 2:37 to play and his team up 83-68, the two teams traded fouls over the next three possessions. On the final one, Brian Grandieri made both free throws to give Penn a 87-69 lead with just 2:04 left.
Key performance Gaines dished out 12 of Penn’s assists, scored nine points on 4-of-9 shooting (including one three-pointer) and recorded a steal and a blocked shot in 22 minutes. The freshman’s assist total was one shy of the school record, and marked only the eighth time in program history a player had recorded that many assists in a game.
Key statistic Much to Miller’s delight, Penn recorded 30 assists to only 14 turnovers, while The Citadel recorded 10 assists and 19 turnovers.
Notes

– Grandieri was the game’s leading scorer with 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field, including 1-of-4 from three-point range and a perfect 7-of-7 from the foul line. He also pulled down five rebounds, dished out four assists, and grabbed one steal.

– The Citadel was led in scoring by freshman forward Austin Dahn, who finished the night with 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field, including 4-of-5 from three-point range. On the whole, the Bulldogs made 11 of 17 three-point attempts — a sizzling 64.7 percent from deep.

– Penn finally enjoyed a good shooting night from the field, converting 33 of its 57 field goal attempts (57.9 percent) including 9 of its 19 three-point shots (47.4 percent). The Quakers also shook off their recent free throw shooting woes, making 18 of 22 attempts (81.8 percent) from the line.

– Penn recorded assists on a whopping 30 of its 33 baskets.

– The Bulldogs caused problems on the offensive glass, grabbing 43.2 percent of the caroms at their own end and notching 14 second-chance points. The Quakers didn’t miss many shots, but when they did they were less effective at getting their own rebounds, grabbing 32.0 percent offensively and scoring just four second-chance points.

– Penn will be back in action on Friday, November 23, when it faces Virginia in the late game of the Philly Classic quadruple header at The Palestra, with a 9:00 pm ET approximate tip time.
