Keys to the Game |
Key sequence |
Jeremy Lin tied the game at 52-52 with a three-pointer at the 7:53 mark, but 20 seconds later, Justin Joyner answered back with a three for UC Santa Barbara. Evan Harris’s jumper wouldn’t fall, and Nedim Pajevic connected on a pair of free throws. Harvard got three shots on its next possession, but none of them would go down, and Pajevic made the Crimson pay with a jumper at the other end. Following a missed layup by Andrew Pusar, Lin fouled Alex Harris on a layup. The Gauchos’ guard tacked on the free throw for a three-point play and a quick 10-0 run that put Harvard in a double-digit hole with five minutes left to play.

Key sign it was over |
Two Drew Housman free throws got Harvard back within seven with 4:11 on the clock, but Ivan Elliott’s layup and James Powell’s three-pointer gave UCSB its largest lead of the night at 67-55. The Crimson’s Harris got one of two at the free throw line, but Powell got inside for a layup, then came up with a steal and found his teammate Harris for a layup and a 15-point cushion. After a pair of scoreless Harvard possessions, Alex Harris added two free throws, then Elliott dunked to cap off a back-breaking 13-1 run that finished off the Crimson and rendered the final 1:29 meaningless.

Key performance |
Alex Harris was the game’s leading scorer with 24 points. Harris missed all four three-point attempts on the night, but was 8 of 13 on two-point attempts and hit 8 of 9 at the line, to go with seven rebounds.

Key statistic |
Harvard shot just 11 of 33 (33.3 percent) after halftime, while UCSB torched the Crimson defense with an 18-for-30 (60.0 percent) shooting performance in the second stanza.

Notes
– Housman led Harvard with 18 points and four assists, while Lin made amends for his struggles the previous night with 15 points on 6-for-11 shooting in front of the hometown crowd.
– Evan Harris had a very rough offensive night for the Crimson, missing all seven shots and getting his only three points at the free throw line.
– Harvard recorded just nine assists on the night and committed 22 turnovers — compared to just 13 for UCSB.
– After getting pounded on the defensive glass by Stanford less than 24 hours earlier, the Crimson did a much better job against the Gauchos, limiting them to just 19.4-percent offensive rebounding.
– Harvard had an uncharacteristically poor night at the free throw line, making just 16 of 26 (61.5 percent) from the stripe.
– The Crimson will look to leave the Bay Area with a win when it plays its third and final game in the Basketball Travelers Classic against Northwestern State (0-2) on Sunday, November 11 at 3:30 pm ET.
