Keys to the Game |
Key sequence |
After Marlon Sanders had restored Dartmouth’s double-digit lead with a layup at the 5:36 mark, VMI’s Reggie Williams answered with a lay-in and foul, but couldn’t tack on the free throw. Williams then came up with a steal and scored another layup to make it 80-74 with just over five minutes remaining. Elgin Fitzgerald’s jumper wouldn’t fall, and Travis Holmes scored the Keydets’ third straight lay-in to cut the Big Green’s lead to just four. However, at the other end, Fitzgerald found Robbie Pride open on the arc for an important three-pointer and a seven-point advantage. Fitzgerald then was fouled and hit one of two to make it a 84-76 game with 3:49 remaining.

Key sign it was over |
VMI had the ball with under two minutes left and a chance to cut into a six-point Dartmouth lead, but Alex Barnett came up with a steal. At the other end, Sanders hit his first throw and missed the second, but grabbed his own rebound, and Michael Giovacchini found Barnett for a layup and a 92-83 lead with 1:22 remaining. Christian Hunter misfired on a three-pointer and DeVon Mosley controlled the rebound and was fouled, hitting both free throws for a double-digit lead. Following a Travis Holmes missed three, Barnett fed Giovacchini for a layup that made it 96-83 in Dartmouth’s favor with 53 seconds showing on the clock.

Key statistic |
Rebounding had been a major issue for the Big Green last season, but it wasn’t on this night. Dartmouth pounded VMI on the boards, grabbing 45.0 percent at its offensive end while holding the Keydets to 31.9 percent.

Notes
– Mosley topped all scorers with 23 points, despite a 1-for-5 performance from three-point range.
– Williams led the way for VMI with 19 points in 19 minutes off the bench.
– The game was played at the Keydets’ trademark frenetic pace, with 83 possessions per side.
– Fitzgerald (11 points and seven rebounds in 16 minutes) and Pride (10 points in 20 minutes) had much better evenings in front of friends and family in their home state.
– Johnathan Ball got his first start of the season coming back from a high ankle sprain, fouling out with six points after 16 minutes.
– Both teams were cold from the outside, but thanks to a lot of layups, Dartmouth made 31 of 52 attempts (59.6 percent) inside the arc and VMI wasn’t far behind, hitting 23 of 42 (54.8 percent).
