Penn junior Tommy McMahon underwent offseason hip surgery and will sit out the upcoming season. The 6-7 wing started 11 of the team’s 30 contests last year and averaged 5.0 points per game. McMahon told the Daily Pennsylvanian that he plans on staying at Penn an extra year and applying for an additional season of eligibility with a de facto medical redshirt.
Slant: McMahon has been hampered by injuries in each of his first two collegiate seasons, and there is hope the surgical procedure will alleviate these problems. Glen Miller told the Daily Pennsylvanian that McMahon had been unable to practice every day and he looked uncomfortable at times out on the court, so if the surgery is a success, the highly touted recruit could yet realize his potential on the court. In the meantime, wing is the one position where Penn has plenty of depth this season, so the immediate impact could be minimized.
