Scout.com is reporting that Garvin Hunt of the Sagemont Upper School in Florida has committed verbally to Penn. The 6-9, 225-pound center opted for the Quakers over scholarship offers from the likes of Charlotte, Delaware, George Mason, Massachusetts, Richmond, Santa Clara, South Florida, and Wichita State — among others. Hunt averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds as a junior last season. He is the third member of Glen Miller’s balanced 2008 recruiting class to announce a commitment, joining point guard Zack Rosen and wing Rob Belcore.
Sagemont coach Adam Ross had the following to say on Hunt’s decision:
“Garvin is extremely excited about going to and playing for Penn. He feels like he can be an impact player for four years and help maintain the dominance that Penn has had in the Ivy League. Garvin is a great person, a great student, and will be a tremendous asset to Penn on campus and on the court.”
Slant: After playing basketball only a few years, Hunt saw his stock jump this summer when his basketball ability began to catch up rapidly with his outstanding size and athleticism. The Penn staff was one of the first to take note of him, and their early pursuit of the big man paid off with the commitment. With a sky-high ceiling, Hunt’s addition makes the Quakers’ 2008 class an outstanding recruiting haul, with potential All-Ivy players at the point, wing, and post. Add in the new Harvard staff’s remarkable early success on the recruiting trail and key commitments for Brown, Columbia, Princeton, and Yale, it’s looking like a banner year for the Ivy League futures market.
