Craig Robinson picked up an important commitment this week when Stefan Kaluz of Corona del Mar High School in California announced his intention to attend Brown. The Costa Mesa Daily Pilot reports the 6-9 big man chose the Bears over Princeton and scholarship offers from Fordham, UC Irvine, and UC Santa Barbara. Kaluz averaged 21 points, 12 rebounds, and 2 blocks per game as a junior, while leading his team to a Section Division III-A title. He is the third member of Robinson’s 2008 recruiting class to go public with his commitment, joining point guard Marques Coleman and power forward Noel Hollingsworth.
Slant: After relying on his Chicago-area connections for much of his first recruiting class, Robinson is showing he can recruit out West as well this year, with all three commitments coming from western states. With Evan Schmidt’s basketball future in doubt, Kaluz could be a crucial recruit for the program. He told the Daily Pilot as much, remarking, “[T]he coach said I was a missing piece.” The current freshman class is loaded with shooting guards and small forwards, so now that Robinson has brought in a point guard and a couple of big men for next season, Brown’s long-term prospects are looking good.
