Keys to the Game
Key sequence Cornell’s lead had been trimmed to two when Andrew Naeve scored a layup and was fouled with 2:25 remaining. Naeve couldn’t finish off the three-point play, and Eric Flato drilled a three-pointer from in front of the Yale bench to bring the Bulldogs within one. Graham Dow lost the ball driving to the hoop, and the Big Red bailed out Caleb Holmes, fouling him when he went airborne going out of bounds underneath the basket. Holmes hit both free throws to put Yale on top by one — its first lead of the game — and Ryan Wittman couldn’t find the range on a three-pointer. Naeve hauled in the offensive board, but his putback was blocked by Matt Kyle with 65 seconds left. Nick Holmes was whistled for traveling, and Wittman drew a foul at the other end. The freshman hit both free throws to put Cornell back in front by one with 32 ticks on the clock.
Key sign it was over Yale called a 30-second timeout with 24 seconds left, and ran down the clock inside of five seconds. Casey Hughes got the ball on the left baseline and went up, drawing the foul from Louis Dale with 2.0 seconds remaining. Hughes — a 52.2-percent career free throw shooter — missed both attempts from the line. Naeve grabbed the rebound and the clock expired, giving Cornell the victory.
Key performance Naeve led Cornell with 15 points on 7-for-10 shooting, including the important bucket late. The senior center added 10 rebounds — three offensive — to go with three blocks and a steal in 35 minutes.
Key statistic It was fitting that two missed free throws ended up costing Yale the game. The Bulldogs finished the evening just 9 of 17 (52.9 percent) from the line, including a pair of missed front ends of one-and-ones.

– Flato led all scorers with 18 points on 6-for-14 shooting — including 4 of 10 from three.

– Both teams got big boosts from reserves, with Travis Pinick pouring in 14 points and five rebounds in 22 minutes for the Bulldogs, while Alex Tyler chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds in 26 minutes for the Big Red.

– Cornell jumped out to a 23-8 lead and held a 12-point advantage with 10:59 left in the game, but Yale would use a lightning-fast 10-0 run over a period of just 2:26 to close within two.

– Each team attempted 19 three-pointers, and neither one fared particularly well from beyond the arc. Yale connected on four threes (21.1 percent), while Cornell hit six (31.6 percent).
