Keys to the Game
Key sequence A Mark McAndrew three-point play drew Brown to within six at 44-38 with 12:54 remaining in the game. Joe Bova answered with a three-pointer, and after the two teams traded misses for two possessions each, Bova grabbed an offensive rebound and laid it in for a double-digit lead. McAndrew hit two free throws, but John Baumann drilled a three, and Patrick Foley came up with a steal and sank a jumper to push the margin to 14. Following a Scott Friske free throw, Bova struck again from beyond the arc to make it a 57-41 game at the 9:23 mark.
Key sign it was over Brown had closed to within 65-54 with 3:36 left and had a chance to close within single digits, but K.J. Matsui came up with steal and took it in for a layup. An exchange of misses led to a Sam Manhanga layup. Matsui was fouled and hit both free throws, before McAndrew misfired on a three-pointer. Columbia ran 30 seconds off the clock before Foley missed a jumper, then Damon Huffman made it a 10-point game with a three-pointer. However, Mack Montgomery went 2-for-2 at the line, and Matsui followed suit after a Friske free throw to make 73-60 with just 37 seconds on the clock.
Key performance Baumann was Columbia’s leading scorer with 21 points, hitting 8 of 11 shots and all three attempts from beyond the arc. The junior big man also added nine rebounds and a pair of steals in 33 minutes.
Key statistic Brown lost the turnover battle 18-12, and Columbia took full advantage, outscoring the Bears 27-7 in points off turnovers. The Lions scored on the next possession following 12 of Brown’s 18 turnovers.
Notes

– McAndrew had another huge night for Brown with a game-high 26 points on 6-of-10 shooting — including 4 of 7 from three. The junior guard hit all 10 free throw attempts and added four rebounds and four assists.

– Foley got his first collegiate start at the point. He didn’t shoot well from the field (3 of 10), but finished with 14 points thanks to a 7-for-7 night at the line and handed out seven assists.

– Both teams were on fire from the outside, with Brown going 10 of 23 (43.5 percent) from three and Columbia hitting 12 of 26 (46.2 percent).

– Free throw shooting also was stellar, with the two teams combining to go 41 of 46 (89.1 percent) at the stripe.

– Joe Jones got big contributions from his bench, which outscored Brown’s 30-10, thanks to 18 points by Matsui and 10 by Bova.

– The Lions dominated on the boards, holding Brown to 17.4-percent offensive rebounding while grabbing 38.2 percent at their offensive end.

– Brown heads home to host Harvard (10-12, 3-5 Ivy) on Friday, February 16 at 7:00 pm ET, and Columbia heads down to Philadelphia to take on Ivy leader Penn (14-8, 5-1 Ivy).
