Keys to the Game
Key sequence Princeton held a three-point lead after two Justin Conway free throws with 1:53 left in regulation, only to see Drew Housman tie the game at 56 with a three-pointer seven second later. Luke Owings couldn’t dial up a three-pointer, and Brad Unger was fouled at the other end with 58 seconds on the clock, but the 83.3-percent free throw shooter missed both free throws. Evan Harris came up with a steal, and Harvard had a chance to win at the end of regulation. Housman’s layup attempt sailed over the backboard with six seconds left, but the officials ruled it a block by Kyle Koncz and awarded Harvard the ball out of bounds. Jim Goffredo took the inbounds pass in front of the Harvard bench, but lost the ball, resulting in overtime after Princeton’s heave at the buzzer wouldn’t go.
Key sign it was over After Housman had tied the game with a difficult shot 1:42 into the second overtime, Koncz hit a three-pointer to put the Tigers back on top by three. Two Housman free throws make it a one-point game, but Conway got inside for a layup at the 2:17 mark. Housman’s layup attempt wouldn’t fall, and Unger couldn’t get a follow to drop. Conway wrestled the rebound away from him, and after the two teams traded misses, Lincoln Gunn hit one of two at the line to make it a two-possession game. Housman again missed a layup, and Conway leaked out on the inbounds pass, going in for a fastbreak layup and a 70-64 lead. Andrew Pusar and Housman each hit a layup on the Crimson’s subsequent possessions, but Noah Savage hit all four of his free throws to maintain the six-point cushion. When Housman’s three-pointer wouldn’t go down with 10 seconds left, the Tigers had snapped a five-game skid.
Key performance Gunn played all 50 minutes for Princeton, tallying a career-best 22 points on 7-for-14 shooting — 5 of 11 from three. The freshman added five assists, four rebounds, and a steal without committing a turnover on the evening.
Key statistic Harvard came into the game shooting free throws at a 75.6-percent clip as a team, but the Crimson was just 5 of 11 at the free throw line during the final 5:17 of regulation and the first overtime.
