Keys to the Game
Key sequence Columbia led 53-49 with just over 10 minutes left, when Yale embarked on a game-changing run. Eric Flato made it a two-point game with a pair of free throws, then Ross Morin’s conventional three-point play gave the Bulldogs the lead. Two Nick Holmes free throws and a Flato jumper make it a 58-53 game, then Flato added two free throws to give Yale a seven-point edge. The junior point guard then drilled a three-pointer and came up with the steal. He was fouled by Brett Loscalzo going up for a fastbreak layup and took a nasty spill, earning Loscalzo an intentional foul. Casey Hughes shot the free throws for Flato, converting both, then Morin scored from in close to finish off an 18-0 run that put the Bulldogs in front 67-53 with 6:58 left.
Key sign it was over Patrick Foley’s three-point play at the 5:14 mark make it a 70-58 game, and the Lions had a chance to further cut into their deficit after Caleb Holmes missed his first free throw in a month, but Foley couldn’t get a layup to fall. At the other end, Caleb Holmes atoned for his free throw miss with a three-pointer. Following another Foley miss, Caleb Holmes got to the hoop for a layup and a 76-58 Yale lead with just 3:57 showing on the clock.
Key performance Flato led all scorers with a career-high 26 points on 6-for-13 shooting and 4 of 8 from three-point range. He was 10 of 11 at the free throw line and added four rebounds, two assists, and two steals in 34 minutes.
