January 21 Power Rankings

Harvard and Princeton are on hiatus for exams, so this was a week that saw just four games played. Two Saturday upsets by road teams in Ivy play shook up things considerably, while a disappointing home loss to a weak opponent probably cost the league a shot at a winning record in interconference play.

1. Penn (10-6, 2-0 Ivy) 1 The Quakers won their fourth straight on Thursday when they pulled out a thrilling high-scoring win at La Salle in a game pretty much devoid of defense. Penn will get two more chances to show it can defend non-midmajors when it faces Temple and Saint Joseph’s this week.
2. Cornell (9-8, 2-1 Ivy) 3 The Big Red has rebounded nicely from the Penn loss, smoking Princeton and pulling out a close game for a change on Saturday at Columbia. Steve Donahue’s team has shown improvement defensively and has begun to move beyond the three-pointer offensively.
3. Brown (6-11, 1-1 Ivy) 8 The Bears shoot up the rankings thanks to an improbable win at Yale made possible by a second-half explosion by Mark McAndrew. Brown has been inconsistent from game to game, but that result shows that any opponent who sleeps on the Bears does so at its own peril.
4. Princeton (9-6, 0-2 Ivy) 5 Between last weekend’s performance in New York, Kyle Koncz’s injury, and Jeff Peterson de-committing, moving up a spot might be the best thing to happen to the Tigers in a while. And with Princeton in the midst of finals, all it took was Yale dumping a game to Brown.
5. Columbia (10-7, 1-2 Ivy) 4 Joe Jones got outcoached badly in Saturday’s loss to Cornell, and should have tried more things down the stretch with his team’s offense stuck in the mud. Now the Lions are in a situation where they desperately need a road win in Ithaca to avoid sinking to 1-3 in the league.
6. Yale (5-10, 1-1 Ivy) 2 It’s some serious déjà vu: losses by some other first-division contenders focus attention on the Bulldogs, who immediately proceed to go down in flames in their next game to a team they should beat. That’s not the kind of consistency James Jones is looking for out of his team.
7. Harvard (8-8, 1-1 Ivy) 6 If Frank Sullivan is tired of the attention being paid to Brian Cusworth’s impending eligibility expiration, he may want to head down to the Bahamas for the next week. With the big man’s collegiate career now down to the upcoming Yale-Brown weekend, it’s simply big news.
8. Dartmouth (6-9, 1-1 Ivy) 7 The poor play that characterized the loss at Harvard carried over to a very disheartening home loss to a struggling New Hampshire squad. Leon Pattman needs to be showing up to play at the opening tip, not waiting until after halftime to make an impact on the game.
