Keys to the Game
Key sequence Yale led 56-50 with 10:31 remaining in the contest when Mark McAndrew hit a three-pointer. Following a 1-for-2 performance at the line by Eric Flato, McAndrew drew Brown within two with a layup. After two Yale turnovers sandwiched around a missed Flato three-pointer, Colin Aldridge drilled a three to put the Bears on top. Craig Robinson was ejected due to a second technical foul for calling for a carry on Flato, and two Flato free throws gave the lead back to the Bulldogs. Jason Abromaitis missed both free throws on the subsequent possession, but McAndrew couldn’t hit the front end of a one-and-one. While Yale missed three straight shots, McAndrew hit two free throws to put Brown back in front, then added to the lead with a layup. When Damon Huffman hit his first free throw with 5:42 left, a 13-3 run gave the Bears a 63-49 advantage.
Key sign it was over Travis Pinick found Sam Kaplan for a layup to give Yale a 67-66 lead at the two-minute mark, but McAndrew answered with a three-pointer 18 seconds later. Huffman came up with the steal and McAndrew scored on the fastbreak to push the margin to four. Two Ross Morin free throws cut the Bulldogs’ deficit in half, but a mix-up in the result resulted in Yale sending only four players out . Brown ran down the shot clock and Huffman drilled a huge three-pointer with 29 ticks left to make it a 74-69 game. Despite playing with only four players due to a substitution mix-up, Flato scored on a layup to make it a one-possession game with 15 seconds remaining. However, Marcus Becker hit two free throws to put away the game.
Key performance McAndrew was limited to four scoreless minutes in the first half due to foul trouble, but exploded after halftime, finishing with 27 points to lead all scorers. He finished 4 of 5 from three-point range and 9 of 11 overall, and added four rebounds and three assists.
Key statistic Unlike the first meeting last weekend, Brown was on fire from the outside, hitting 10 of 18 from three-point range (55.6 percent). Yale was a much more modest 5 of 15 (33.3 percent).
