Keys to the Game
Key sequence John Baumann’s three-pointer broke a tie, putting Columbia on top 43-40 with 8:58 remaining. The Lions had a chance to augment their lead on their next two possessions, but couldn’t get it done, and eventually Louis Dale knotted the game with a three. While Columbia committed turnovers on its next three possessions, Cornell missed its next four shots. Following a missed three by Baumann, Dale gave the Big Red the lead with a layup, then added a jumper for a personal 7-0 run that put Cornell up 47-43 at the 3:31 mark.
Key sign it was over A Justin Armstrong jumper at the 1:47 mark ended a Columbia scoring drought of over seven minutes and brought the Lions to within 47-45. At the other end, Andrew Naeve grabbed an offensive board, but was fouled and blew the front end of the one-and-one, giving Columbia a shot to tie with under a minute remaining. Brett Loscalzo couldn’t connect on a three-pointer, but grabbed his own miss. Following a timeout, Armstrong misfired on a jumper and Cornell controlled the board. However, Dale missed the first free throw of a one-and-one, giving the Lions new life. After a timeout with 20 ticks left, Baumann threw away the ball, and Dale made it a two-possession game with a pair of free throws with four seconds remaining.
Key performance Dale went just 1-for-5 from the outside, but he came up big for Cornell down the stretch, scoring the final nine points of the afternoon for the Big Red. The freshman guard finished with 13 points on 5-for-11 shooting and added eight rebounds and three assists.
Key statistic The Big Red’s outside shots weren’t falling, so it went inside, outscoring the Lions by a shocking 30-14 margin in the paint. Cornell shot 18 of 29 (62.1 percent) inside the arc, compared to just 12 of 32 (37.5 percent) for Columbia.
Notes

– Naeve had a very strong game, registering game highs in both points (15) and rebounds (nine) and shooting 6 of 8 from the field. The senior big man also recorded five blocks at the defensive end.

– Baumann was the only Lion in double figures with 13 points, including 3-for-4 shooting from outside the arc.

– Ben Nwachukwu played just 10 ineffective minutes in the first half and went to the bench for good 1:51 into the second half after Andrew Naeve went off for six points on Cornell’s first three possessions after halftime. The junior center was held scoreless in 12 minutes.

– Ryan Wittman had an uncharacteristically poor outside shooting game, going just 1 of 6 from three-point range. The Big Red struggled as a team, shooting just 2 of 16 (12.5 percent) from long range.

– Cornell dominated the glass against perhaps the best rebounding team in the league. The Big Red grabbed 39.3 percent offensively and held the Lions to just 16.1 percent at their end. Bizarrely, second-chance points were even at seven apiece.

– Turnovers were relatively even (18 for Cornell, 16 for Columbia), but the Lions outscored the Big Red 20-12 in points off turnovers.

– The game featured a combined total of just 13 assists against 34 turnovers.

– The two teams will finish up their home-and-home series in Ithaca on Saturday, January 27, at 3:00 pm ET
