Keys to the Game
Key sequence After a Brian Cusworth baseline jumper just inside the 3-point arc gave Harvard a 60-55 lead with 4:04 remaining in regulation, DeVon Mosley nailed a 3-pointer from the left side and Alex Barnett followed a Drew Housman turnover with a pair of free throws to tie the score for the first time all game at 60-60 with 3:14 to go. Cusworth made the second of two free throws for a 61-60 Harvard lead, but Leon Pattman scored on a dipsy-do layup and again on a fastbreak off a John Ball steal for a 64-61 Dartmouth lead with 2:19 to play. Almost tied up on the floor under his own bakset, Cusworth called a timeout to save a possession and Jim Goffredo made good on the possession by banking in his only three-pointer of the game to knot the score at 64 with 1:50 remaining. A Pattman miss and held ball gave the ball back to Harvard with 34 seconds left. With one second remaining, Cusworth spun just outside the foul line and put up a shot to win that was just too long, sending the contest to overtime.
Key sign it was over With Dartmouth holding a 71-70 lead in overtime, Barnett forced up a short, off-balance jumper on the right baseline to prevent a shot clock violation, and it dropped in with 1:19 remaining. A Mosley steal led to a right-handed, breakaway layup by Pattman for a 75-70 Dartmouth lead at 58 seconds. After a missed triple by Housman, Dan Biber made a breakaway layup that made it a seven-point Dartmouth lead with 34.5 seconds left.
Key performance It would be wrong to overlook either Pattman’s 20 points after the break (and season-high 27 points) or Cusworth’s fill-the-scoresheet night that featured 25 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks. But while those numbers are impressive, they aren’t a huge surprise for either star. Barnett’s career-high 19 points, 10 rebounds, two credited blocks — he probably had another two or three uncredited — and several altered shots led Dartmouth coach Terry Dunn to call it the high-flying sophomore’s finest collegiate game.
Key statistic After shooting 34.6 percent in the first half, Dartmouth connected on 56.7 percent of its shots in the second half and 85.7 percent (6 of 7) in the overtime.
