Keys to the Game
Key sequence Leading 48-47 with 2:25 remaining in regulation, Damon Huffman hit his first free throw, but missed the second. After a 30-second timeout, Jon Killen drilled a three-pointer to put Southern Methodist on top by one. Chris Skrelja was whistled for a travel, but Nate Eads blocked Ike Ofoegbu’s shot, and Marcus Becker made an athletic play to control the rebound and take it up the sideline. Becker was fouled and tied the game with one of two at the line, then came up huge by swiping the ball out of bounds off of Killen at the other end with 10.8 seconds left. Mark McAndrew penetrated, but kicked it back out to the perimeter, and a Huffman jumper that wouldn’t fall at the buzzer, necessitating overtime.
Key sign it was over Becker got a big bucket to pull Brown to within one with 38 seconds left in the overtime session. Despite a mere three-second differential between the game and shot clocks, Craig Robinson opted not to foul. The strategy backfired big-time when the Mustangs ran down the clock and Donatas Rackauskas hit a dagger three-pointer that made it a two-possession game with just six ticks left.
Key performance SMU’s Devon Pearson tied for top scoring honors with 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting, adding 10 rebounds.
Key statistic The Mustangs have been a strong rebounding team all season, and they continued that against the Bears. SMU grabbed 18 of 37 rebounds (48.6 percent) at their end, and held Brown to just 8 of 30 (26.6 percent) offensive rebounding. The home team had a big 20-9 advantage in second-chance points.
