Keys to the Game
Key sequence After leading nearly the entire game, an 11-2 UMES run put Dartmouth in a 55-50 hole with under four minutes left. But Michael Giovacchini brought the Big Green within three with two free thows, then after an offensive foul on the Hawks, Marlon Sanders located Giovacchini for a three-pointer plus a foul. Giovacchini converted the free throw for a four-point play and a one-point Dartmouth lead. Antonio McMillion put back his own miss to put the Hawks back in front, but Alex Barnett’s jumper gave the Big Green the lead again. UMES grabbed offensive rebounds of two of its misses before turning it over, then a Dan Biber jumper extended the Dartmouth advantage to three with 53 seconds left.
Key sign it was over McMillion blocked Sanders’s layup, corralled the rebound, and scored a layup at the other end to bring UMES to within one with 24 ticks left. The Hawks intentionally fouled Giovacchini, who hit both free throws to make it a three-point game again. Barnett fouled Jesse Brooks with five seconds on the clock, but Brooks missed the front end of a one-and-one. Biber grabbed the defensive board, was fouled, and hit both free throws with four seconds left to ice the game.
Key performance In his first game back from a broken wrist, Biber made his presence felt. The sophomore forward came off the bench to lead Dartmouth in scoring with 14 points in 17 minutes, including six of seven at the line.
Key statistic The Big Green struggled from three-point range, hitting just 2 of 12 (16.7 percent), but was much better inside the arc. Dartmouth hit 19 of 37 two-pointers (51.4 percent), while UMES was just 9 of 29 (31.0 percent).
