Key sequence Winless Iona was hanging tough, trailing by six with under two minutes left in the first half when Princeton opened up the game with an 11-2 run bridging halftime. Kyle Koncz got loose for his second-consecutive three-pointer to get things started. Mike Harris hit a jumper in the paint, and Zach Finley got inside for a layup, but missed a chance to finish off the three-point play. After a pair of missed free throws for the Gaels, Noah Savage drilled a three-pointer with seven ticks left, and Justin Conway swiped the ball at the buzzer to send the Tigers into halftime with a 32-20 lead. Luke Owings finished off the spurt with a three-pointer 20 seconds into the second half to give Princeton a 15-point advantage.
Key sign it was over A turnover and a missed front end of a one-and-one, combined with Iona hitting five of six free throws made things interesting late, bringing the Gaels within 53-46 with 1:15 left. But Edwin Buffmire was perfect at the line, and after a Conway steal with 52 ticks left, Princeton ran 16 seconds off the clock before Strittmatter hit two free throws for an 11-point lead with 36 seconds left. With that, Princeton had its third road win of the year and Iona remained the only winless program in Division I.
Key performance Conway tied for high-scoring honors with 16 points, adding four rebounds, two assists, and four steals in 33 minutes. The senior was a very efficient 6 of 9 from the field.
Key statistic The two teams’ overall shooting numbers were fairly similar, but Princeton had a huge edge from the outside. The Tigers hit 10 of 22 three-point attempts (45.5 percent), while the Gaels shot just 1 of 5 (20.0 percent) from beyond the arc.
Notes

– Anthony Bruin was the only Iona starter in double figures, matching Conway’s 16 points while hauling in 10 rebounds. His fellow Gael starters combined to shoot just 7 of 25 (28.0 percent) from the field.

– The Tigers recorded a season-high 13 steals as a team.

– Princeton did not record a single second-chance point, grabbing just 3 of a possible 27 offensive rebounds (11.1 percent). Iona rebounded at 35.5 percent offensively, but had only nine second-chance points.

– The Gaels hurt themselves at the free throw line, where they were just 15 of 24 (62.5 percent). Three Iona players had 0-for-2 trips to the stripe.

– Led by Mike Strittmatter’s 10 points, Joe Scott got good production from his bench, which outscored Iona’s reserves 18-5.

– Princeton returns home to play host to Rice (6-5) on Saturday, January 6, at 2:00 pm ET.
