Keys to the Game |
Key sequence |
Three-pointers on three consecutive Navy possessions had slashed Yale’s 12-point lead to just three midway through the second half. Nick Holmes stopped the bleeding with a three-pointer, then after a Greg Sprink miss, Jason Abromaitis hit two free throws. Following a string of fruitless possessions for both teams, Casey Hughes stuck a jumper to make it a double-digit game. When Hughes found Abromaitis for a layup, Yale had answered Navy’s 9-0 run with one of its own, as the Bulldogs’ lead was back to 12 at 64-52 with 6:20 remaining in the contest.

Key sign it was over |
Navy trailed by 11 inside of three minutes and a pair of Yale turnovers gave the Midshipmen two opportunities to cut into their deficit. But Sprink gave it back the first time, and Adam Teague couldn’t hit from long range on the other possession, before Hughes eventually made it a 13-point game with a layup at the 1:29 mark. Corey Johnson would answer, but two Caleb Holmes free throws kept the margin at 13. When Bryce Brigham couldn’t sink a three-pointer, Caleb Holmes hit one of two at the line to make it a 73-59 game, and the final 55 seconds were a mere formality.

Key performance |
When Eric Flato went down with an ankle injury midway through the first half, Alexander Zampier stepped in and played well at the point for the Bulldogs. The freshman finished the game with 10 points, four assists, and three steals off the bench.

Key statistic |
Playing the jumpshooting, perimeter-oriented Midshipmen was exactly what a foul-happy Bulldog defense needed. Yale had 26 attempts from the line compared to just 12 for the hosts, and outscored Navy 18-9 from the stripe.
