Keys to the Game
Key sequence Yale trailed by just six with under 10 minutes left, but Caleb Holmes couldn’t hit a jumper, and a foul resulted in two Massachusetts free throws. Following an Eric Flato missed jumper, Ricky Harris got inside for layup to push the margin to double digits. After the two teams traded fruitless possessions, Gary Forbes came up with a steal and took it in for a breakaway dunk. Yale had multiple chances to cut its deficit to single digits, but missed its next three shots and Rashaun Freeman put the Minutemen up 12 with a layup at the 4:55 mark. Brandon Thomas stole the ball and went in for a dunk to give UMass a 70-56 lead with 4:31 left.
Key sign it was over Flato went to the line with Yale down 14 and got the first free throw, but couldn’t convert the second. Nick Holmes got a steal, but missed a quick three-pointer. The Bulldogs got the ball back out of bounds, but Nick Holmes missed a layup. Thomas misfired on a three-pointer, but neither Hughes nor Caleb Holmes could knock down a three at the other end. Tiki Mayben made it a 15-point game with a layup, after a Ross Morin missed jumper, Flato forced a turnover and took it in for the easy two. However, after a timeout, Freeman put back a Matt Bonner miss to make it a 74-59 game with under two minutes remaining.
Key performance James Life was the top scorer for UMass with 16 points on 6-for-11 shooting — including 4 of 8 from three-point range — while adding three steals.
Key statistic Yale shot just 8 of 31 (25.8 percent) from the field in the first half, overshadowing its 18 free throw attempts prior to halftime. Meanwhile, UMass shot a much healthier 14 of 31 (45.2 percent). As a result, the Bulldogs trailed 40-32 at intermission and never were able to make up that deficit.
Notes

– Flato was the game’s top scorer with 22 points, including 8-for-9 free throw shooting.

– Hughes was the only other Yale player in double figures with 12 points, despite a very rough 2-for-13 shooting performance.

– The hosts dominated on the boards, holding Yale to 27.7-percent offensive rebounding, while hauling down 41.7 percent at their own offensive end.

– UMass committed a whopping 30 turnovers, compared to 21 for Yale. The Bulldogs outscored the Minutemen 25-17 in points off turnovers.

– Sam Kaplan did not play for the third straight game after suffering a broken nose against American back on December 9.

– Stephane Lasme had a quiet offensive game with eight points and six turnovers, but the forward was a monster for the Minutemen on defense with seven blocks and 15 of his game-high 16 rebounds at the defensive end.

– James Jones got relatively little production from his bench, as the UMass reserves badly outscored Yale’s 33-16.

– The Bulldogs will look to get back on the winning track when they head to Annapolis to face Navy (9-4) on Saturday, December 30 at 7:00 pm ET.
