Keys to the Game
Key sequence UC Irvine broke open a tied game with an early string of 16 unanswered points. After Jim Goffredo had tied the game at 7-7 with a three-pointer, Nic Campbell answered with a three of his own. Goffredo couldn’t make it two in a row, and Mark Kelley hit a jumper. Following a James Lambert turnover, Campbell struck again from the outside. The Crimson got two chances on its next possession, but couldn’t score on either one. Harvard got a stop, but committed a turnover. Chad DeCasas hauled in rebounds of two of his own misses before recording a conventional three-point play. Following a Goffredo turnover, Patrick Sanders sank a jumper. Housman misfired, then Adam Templeton hit a three to cap off the 16-0 run that put UC Irvine up 23-7.
Key sign it was over The Anteaters used a jumper and a pair of three-pointers for a quick 8-0 spurt that pushed their lead to a game-high 30 points. With Harvard down 74-44 with under five minutes left, garbage time had arrived in Irvine.
Key performance Templeton led all scorers with 18 points. The former Harvard recruiting prospect scored all of those points on his 6-of-9 performance from three-point range, while also grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out two assists.
Key statistic The Crimson had a very poor shooting night, hitting just 4 of 21 (19.0 percent) from the arc and 20 of 66 (30.3 percent) overall. The Anteaters enjoyed a strong shooting night, connecting on 11 of 24 (45.8 percent) from three-point range and 52.5 percent overall.
Notes

– Brian Cusworth was the high point man for the Crimson with 11 points.

– Goffredo, Housman, and Evan Harris had very rough homecomings. The Southern California natives combined to shoot just 4 of 33 (12.1 percent) and commited seven turnovers.

– Harvard narrowly lost the turnover battle 13-12, but UC Irvine owned a big 23-11 edge in points off turnovers.

– The Anteaters scored 10 unanswered points shortly before halftime to take a commanding 43-20 lead into the locker room at intermission.

– The Crimson rebounded at just 22.9 percent offensively, grabbing just 11 of 48 rebounds at its end.

– Harvard finishes its non-league schedule at 7-7, and retrns to action on January 6 when it opens Ivy play at Dartmouth (3-7) in a 7:00 pm ET tipoff.
