Keys to the Game
Key sequence Princeton had trailed nearly the entire second half when Luke Rogers put Northwestern State up six with a three-point play at the 8:47 mark. Marcus Schroeder answered with a layup for Princeton and the two teams traded missed three-pointers. Noah Savage hit two free throws to pull Princeton within two, and when Jerry Moody could only manage one of two at the free throw line, Mike Strittmatter’s subsequent three-pointer tied the game at 47-47 with 5:16 left. A Trey Gilder free throw gave Northwestern State a one-point advantage, which would hold up for over two minutes while both sides failed to score. Buffmire ended the drought with a pair of free throws to put the Tigers in front at the 2:31 mark.
Key sign it was over Savage broke a deadlock with two free thows with 61 seconds left, and Gilder could only bring Northwestern State to within one at other end. With the shot clock in single digits, Luke Owings found himself trapped in the corner. He somehow dribbled through the trap, drove the baseline, and finished with a finger roll to push the Tiger lead to three with 21 seconds left. The Demons missed a game-tying three-pointer, and Savage went back to the line with nine ticks left and a chance to put the game away. But the junior missed both free throws, and Northwestern State still had life. Out of a timeout, Joe Scott smartly instructed his team to foul. Rogers made the first, but the miss on the second free throw was controlled by Zach Finley, and Princeton left Milwaukee with a win.
Key performance It addition to his key play late in the game, Owings had his best game of the season. The senior led all scorers with 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting, including a 3-for-4 performance from long range. Owings added four rebounds and three steals.
Key statistic Princeton committed 25 turnovers, compared to 16 for Northwestern State. However, the Demons weren’t able to take convert these opportunities into points, as the Tigers actually managed to outscore them 14-12 in points off turnovers. In ten instances Princeton turned it over, only to have Northwestern State give it right back.
Notes

– Gilder was the top point man for the Demons with 13 off the bench, while no Northwestern State starter reached double digits.

– One night after North Dakota State punished Princeton on the boards, the Tigers limited Northwestern State to just four out of a possible 30 rebounds offensively (13.3 percent), and just four second-chance points.

– With captain Justin Conway sidelined with an injury, Finley made his first collegiate start at center for Princeton. The freshman big man finished with eight points — including a dunk and an impressive drive down the lane for a layup. He also played a big part in controlling the defensive glass with seven defensive boards.

– Marcus Schroeder picked up his second personal foul just 4:26 into the contest and sat for the rest of the half. Kevin Steuerer came on to play the point, seeing his first significant action of the season and finishing with two turnovers and a steal in six minutes.

– Kyle Koncz had a quiet game, failing to hit a three-pointer in three attempts and finishing the night with four points on 1-for-5 shooting before fouling out in the final minute. He was the second Tiger to be disqualified, with Buffmire having picked up his fifth foul with 2:09 left.

– After seven games away from home to start the season, Princeton will make its long-awaited 2006-07 home debut on Wednesday, December 6 with a 7:30 pm ET game against Lehigh (4-6).
