Keys to the Game
Key sequence Mack Montgomery hit a layup on Columbia’s first possession of the second half to trim the Providence lead to 32-27. Two possessions later, Sharaud Curry responded with a three-pointer to make it an eight-point game. Then Weyinmi Efejuku took over the game, sinking a jumper, stealing the ball from Niko Scott and going in for the slam, then capping off a string of buckets on three straight possessions with another dunk to put the Friars up 41-27 with under 17:00 to play.
Key sign it was over Already ahead by 18, the Friars embarked on an emphatic 14-2 to run to make a formerly close game into a blowout. When the dust settled, the Lions trailed 67-39 with just over seven minutes remaining.
Key performance Efejuku, who finished with a game-high 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting. The sophomore guard added five rebounds and an impressive six steals in 28 minutes of action.
Key statistic The Friars forced 22 Lion turnovers on the night, coming up with 15 steals. Consequently, Providence outscored Columbia 33-17 in points off turnovers.
Notes

– Ben Nwachukwu was the high point man for Columbia with 16. Patrick Foley was the only other Lion in double figures, finishing with 10 points off the bench.

– Columbia led for much of the first half, and the game was tied 25-25 with just over two minutes left before intermission. However, Providence closed out the half with a 7-0 run to take a 32-25 lead into the locker room.

– Columbia’s John Baumann struggled for the second straight game, going scoreless on four field goal attempts in 25 minutes.

– The Lions were pounded on the boards by the taller Friars, who limited Columbia to 25.8-percent offensive rebounding, while grabbing 42.9 percent of the rebounds at their end.

– Scott made his first collegiate start, replacing K.J. Matsui at shooting guard. The freshman tallied four ponits on 2-for-7 shooting in 23 minutes, but saw his stellar three-point percentage take a hit with an 0-for-3 performance from beyond the arc.

– Columbia will look to get back in the win column on Saturday, December 2, when Sacred Heart (2-3) pays a visit to Levien Gym for a 2:00 pm ET start.
