Keys to the Game
Key sequence Cornell appeared to be on its way to a relatively easy win when two Ryan Wittman free throws gave the hosts a 60-50 lead with 3:34 left. But Hartford’s Bo Taylor responded with a pair of free throws, Jason Battle turned it over, and Rich Baker nailed a three-pointer to make it a five-point game. When Brian Glowiak came up with a steal and fed Baker for a layup, it was a one-possession game less than 60 seconds later. Battle missed a layup and Michael Turner connected from beyond the arc to tie the game at 60 apiece with 2:12 left.
Key sign it was over Wittman attempted to break a tie with a three-pointer, but misfired and Glowiak grabbed the board, then kept the Hawks’ possession alive with an offensive rebound at the other end. After a 30-second timeout, Taylor put Hartford in front with a jumper with 49 seconds remaining. Down by two, Battle was fouled with 15 ticks left, but only could hit one of two. Baker did the same with seven seconds left, but the Big Red couldn’t get off a shot, as Louis Dale turned it over at the buzzer.
Key performance Hartford’s Taylor scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds. He also hit the eventual game-winner in the final minute.
Key statistic The visitors actually were called for one more personal foul, but the Hawks were much better at getting to the line. Hartford attempted 26 free throws — compared to 15 for Cornell — and hit 18 — compared to eight for the Big Red.
Notes

– Wittman was the game’s top scorer with 22 points, but the Ivy League Rookie of the Week was just 4 of 12 from three-point range.

– Hartford outrebounded Cornell, garnering 36.4 percent of the boards at its end, while holding the Big Red to 30.0 percent.

– The Big Red had 19 assists on its 22 field goals. Graham Dow came off the bench to record 10 of those assists.

– Dale had a good scoring game with 15 points, largely on the strength of 4-for-5 shooting from three-poing range, however the freshman had a 2-4 assist-turnover differential.

– The Big Red’s late collapse may have been partially atributable to its thin bench. Other than Graham Dow’s five points and 28 minutes, Steve Donahue got just two points and 19 minutes from the rest of his bench.

– Cornell will look to snap its two-game skid when it faces über-uptempo VMI in the opening round of the William & Mary Tip-Off Classic on Friday, December 1, at 6:00 pm ET.
