Keys to the Game
Key sequence With Cornell holding a six-point lead with under two minutes left, Stony Brook’s Mitchell Beauford got inside, drew contact, and got the shot to fall. He hit the free throw to cut the margin to three, and after Big Red freshman Louis Dale was whistled for a five-second violation on the subsequent possession, the Seawolves made it a one-point game with a layup by Brandon Hickson. Brian Kreefer got off a shot just before the shot clock expired, but it wouldn’t fall. However, Stony Brook was whistled for a loose ball foul on the rebound, and Andrew Naeve capped off a big night by hitting both free throws to restore the Big Red lead to three with just 27 seconds left.
Key sign it was over Trailing by three with under 15 secondsn left, Stony Brook had two looks at a game-tying three-pointer, but Mike Popoko and Ricky Lucas couldn’t find the bottom of the net. Cornell’s Jason Battle snagged the defensive rebound and was fouled with just 1.6 seconds left. Battle hit the first free throw to make it a two-possession game and put it on ice.
Key performance Naeve, who led Cornell with a career-high 20 points and added eight rebounds and a block. He shot well from the field (6 of 9) and from the line (8 of 10).
