Keys to the Game
Key sequence After trailing most of the first half — and by as many as 12 points — Columbia came out and outscored UC Davis 27-10 to start the second half. John Baumann supplied 10 of those 27 points, including three dunks in a 90-second span, as the Lions ran out to a 12-point lead.
Key sign it was over The Aggies’ Vince Oliver cut the Lion lead to one with a layup with 2:49 left in the contest and had two shots at taking a lead, but couldn’t get either one to drop. Mack Montgomery and Brett Loscalzo hit three-pointers on consecutive possessions, and the Lions combined to hit 7 of 8 free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win.
Key performance Baumann, who exploded for a career-best 29 points to go with 10 rebounds — five offensive. He scored 17 of those points in the second half, leading his team from behind to grab its first win of the season. Baumann’s night could have been even bigger, had he not missed three layups in a 90-second span late in the game.
Key statistic The two teams were basically even in every statistical category, with the glaring exception of free throw attempts. Columbia attempted 30 free throws and made 23 — more than the 21 attempts for UC Davis. The Lions six-point edge at the line proved to make all the difference.
Notes

– Oliver had a huge game for the Aggies, coming close to a triple-double with 26 points, seven rebounds, and nine assists.

– Unbelievably, it was the first time in Baumann’s career he had eclipsed the 20-point mark.

– Loscalzo chipped in with 18 points for the Lions, largely on the strength of 4-for-6 shooting from beyond the arc.

– After starting and playing 20 points the night before, Justin Armstrong was limited to just 10 minutes, scoring just two points. K.J. Matsui started in his place and tallied 11 points.

– Freshman guard Kevin Bulger logged 29 minutes for the Lions and had a solid game with six points, four rebounds, and four assists.

– Columbia returns home to host NJIT in the Tyler Ugolyn Columbia Classic on Friday, November 17 at 7:00 pm ET.
