DeMatha PG Peterson to Princeton

Princeton joined the recent parade of Ivy League verbal commitments when, according to Scout.com, point guard Jeff Peterson of DeMatha Catholic High School became the first publicly known member of the Tigers’ 2007 recruiting class. The 5-11 guard backed up Virginia Tech’s Nigel Munson at point guard his first two seasons at DeMatha, then moved over to shooting guard to start alongside Munson this past year. Peterson is known as an excellent defender who has worked hard on his outside shooting. He is the third point guard to commit to an Ivy League school this fall, joining Harrison Gaines (Penn) and Porter Braswell (Yale).

Slant: Hailing from a legendary high school program that went 34-1 last season, Peterson has the winning pedigree Joe Scott values so highly in his recruiting. The Scout.com article states that Peterson had offers from American, Colgate, Jacksonville, Marshall, and Penn. A month ago, Washington Post recruiting insider Josh Barr wrote that Peterson had scheduled visits with Colgate, Princeton, and Penn. However, with Penn receiving commitments in the past few days from a pair of perimeter players — including its top point guard prospect, Gaines — Peterson’s choice suddenly may have become very easy today.

Munson is now at Virginia Tech, so it will be interesting to see how Peterson fares running the point for DeMatha this season. He is described by those who have scouted him as a “true point guard” and a solid recruit for the Ivy League level. Once he gets to Princeton, Peterson may find himself in yet another battle for playing time at the point. Marcus Schroeder is a freshman at Princeton this year and is a likely candidate for the Ivy League’s Rookie of the Year award.
