Wednesday’s Daily Pennsylvanian broke the news of Tyler Bernardini committing to Penn. The 6-6 wing from the Francis Parker School in San Diego, CA, had received early interest from Arizona State, an offer from San Diego State, and had visited Columbia this past weekend. According to the Daily Pennsylvanian piece, he also had been hearing from Northwestern and Cal prior to committing to the Quakers. In an article from this summer, Scout.com rates Bernardini “among the better shooting small forwards in the West for 2007.” He joins fellow Southern Californian Harrison Gaines in Glen Miller’s recruiting class.
Slant: It’s been quite a week on the recruiting trail for the Penn coaching staff, who got their top point guard late last week and now have landed one of the better available wings. Bernardini’s shooting has drawn rave reviews and he appears to be exactly the kind of wing who excels in a motion offense like Miller’s. His game has drawn comparisons to former All-Ivy Penn wing Jeff Schiffner, though Bernardini is considered more athletic. He has a nice stroke from the arc, but will need to work on his outside shooting to become the dangerous three-point marksman Schiffner was as an upperclassman.
With two perimeter recruits in the fold, this should allow Penn to focus its recruiting efforts on the frontcourt. Scout.com reports highly ranked forward Josh Owens will take his final official visit to Penn the final weekend in October. Owens is weighing offers from Stanford, Penn, Vanderbilt, and Notre Dame as he looks to make his decision in time for the early signing period from November 8-15.
