Keys to the Game
Key sequence Dartmouth led 57-51 with just over two minutes left, when Justin Conway scored his 16th and 17th points of the night on a layup to make it a four-point game. Cal Arnold missed a three-pointer and John Ball grabbed the rebound, but Luke Owings stole the ball from him. At the other end, Scott Greenman found Owings for a three-pointer to cut the Big Green lead to one. After another Dartmouth turnover, Edwin Buffmire posted up Leon Pattman and got the bucket and a foul, hitting the free throw to put Princeton up two with 33.9 seconds left. Pattman tried to tie the game at the other end, but Buffmire got a hand on the shot and Owings collected the rebound.
Key sign it was over In an almost identical end sequence to the teams’ prior meeting in Hanover two weeks ago, Mike Lang hit a three-pointer with four seconds left to cut Princeton’s lead to one. Owings hit both free throws with three seconds left, and Dartmouth threw a long pass into the frontcourt. Ball caught the pass just outside the three-point arc, but rushed the potential game-tying shot and Owings grabbed the rebound to clinch the win.
Key performance Conway’s 17-point, seven-rebound, three-assist, one-steal performance. The junior played all 40 minutes, shooting 6 of 11 from the field. .
Key statistic Princeton’s 19-of-21 free throw shooting. In a battle between two teams who have had problems with fouling this year, it was Princeton who won the battle of the free throw line. The Tigers got to the line six more times than the Big Green, and shot 90.5 percent from the line, compared to 53.3 percent for Dartmouth. The net result was an 11-point boost for Princeton.
Notes
The two teams shot very well, hitting a combined 51.9 percent of their field goal attempts and 46.2 percent of their three-point attempts.
Princeton attempted just 10 three-pointers and 29 two-point field goals. The Tigers hadn’t attempted fewer than 15 three-pointers in any game this season. The 16 two-point field goals made tied a season high.
The loss was Dartmouth’s 19th-straight defeat at Jadwin Gym.
