Keys to the Game |
Key sequence |
Trailing by four with under 14:00 left, reserves Jason Hartford and David Lisle keyed a 15-2 Cornell run that gave the Big Red a 54-45 lead with 8:16 remaning. Cornell repeatedly gouged the Yale defense, getting five layups during the spurt. Hartford capped the run with a three-pointer from in front of the Cornell bench to push the lead to nine, and the Bulldogs would get now closer than three the rest of the way. |
Key sign it was over |
Yale fouled Lenny Collins with 35 seconds left, and the senior hit both free throws to put Cornell up five. Eric Flato rushed the ball up the court and got to the hoop, but couldn’t finish a layup. The rebound was volleyed around and a scrum ensued. When the dust settled, Cornell got the ball on the alternating possession and Yale fouled Lisle, who drained both free throws to put the Big Red up seven with just 22.3 seconds left. Flato found Casey Hughes for a dunk to cut the margin to five, but Lisle hit two more free throws give Cornell an insurmountable 66-59 lead with 15.6 left. |
Key performance |
Lisle’s 16 points in 25 minutes. On senior weekend the Canadian reserve scored a career-high 16 points — 12 of which came in the second half — on 6-for-7 shooting. Lisle also added four rebounds, two assists, and a steal. |
Key statistic |
Cornell’s 39-13 edge in bench scoring. In addition to Lisle’s 16 points, Brian Kreefer tallied 10 and Hartford scored nine — all in the key second-half run. In the second half, the Big Red reserves outscored their Bulldog counterparts 24-2. |
