Keys to the Game |
Key sequence |
Down 70-68 with 38 seconds left in overtime, Harvard’s Zach Martin missed the front end of a one-and-one and Penn controlled the rebound. Ibby Jaaber was fouled and hit the first free throw, but missed the second. However, with Brian Cusworth on the bench with five fouls, Havard was unable to grab the rebound, and it went back to the Quakers on the alternating possession. Given a second chance, Jaaber hit both free throws to put Penn up five with just 21 seconds left. |
Key sign it was over |
Down five with under 20 seconds to play, Harvard’s Matt Stehle airballed a three-pointer, and Brian Grandieri blocked Mike Beal’s follow. Grandieri then hit one of two free throws with six seconds left to put the game away.
|
Key performance |
Jaaber scored 18 of his career high-tying 31 points in the first half and finished 10 of 21 from the floor and 6 of 11 from three-point range for a 61.9-percent effective field goal percentage. Jaaber played 44 minutes without committing a single turnover and added five rebounds, an assist, and two steals. |
Key statistic |
Penn’s 17-of-26 free throw shooting, compared to 7 of 12 for Harvard. When a team makes more free throws than its opponent shoots, it wins roughly 80 percent of the time. Penn went 17-for-26 from the line while Harvard shot only 7-for-12. In the overtime, Penn hit 7 of its 10 free throws, while Harvard missed its only one — a critical front end of a one-and-one. |

Notes |
– |
– Steve Danley picked up his second foul just 4:09 into the game, and only played 11 minutes in the first half. He was injured after picking up his third foul just two minutes into the second and didn’t return. Penn coach Fran Dunphy said his junior big man probably has a broken nose. Danley could have returned to the game and will probably play tomorrow night, according to Dunphy. |

Friedrich Ebede was also injured, slumping to the floor at half court after hitting two free throws. Ebede was fouled hard on a breakaway by Matt Stehle and injured his left groin. His status for tomorrow night wasn’t clear after the game. |

– |
With the injuries to Danley and Ebede, Penn played a four-guard lineup of Jaaber, Grandieri, Eric Osmundson and David Whitehurst for the final 18 minutes of regulation and the overtime. Cusworth was able to take advantage for Harvard, scoring 14 of his 22 points after halftime. He also grabbed 16 rebounds (five offensive) and hit the game-tying three-pointer with 41 seconds left in regulation. |

The game saw a number of career highs set or tied. Zoller set career highs in rebounds with 18 and blocks with five. Grandieri had a career-high 17 points. Whitehurst and Osmundson each dished out six assists, which was a new career high for Whitehurst and tied Osmundson’s previous best. And as previously mentioned, Jaaber tied his career high in scoring with 31 points. For Harvard, Cusworth’s 16 rebounds were a personal best. |

Harvard had 22 turnovers, which turned into 24 points for Penn. The Quakers only turned it over eight times. |

Once again, Penn started slow and picked up momentum late in the first half. After scoring only 13 points in the first 12 minutes of the half, the Quakers outscored Harvard 22-5 over the final eight minutes. The run erased a nine-point deficit and put Penn up 35-27 after 20 minutes. |
