Key sequence Ben Nwachukwu hit a pair of free throws to draw Columbia to within four at 68-64 with 1:49 left, but all the Lions could get out of their next three possessions were two turnovers and a missed three-pointer. Meanwhile, Yale went one-for-two at the line five straight times in this span to push its lead back to nine with under 30 seconds left.
Key sign it was over Coming out of a timeout with 46 seconds left, Columbia’s K.J. Matsui turned over the ball, then fouled Yale’s Nick Holmes. Holmes hit his first free throw and missed the second, but Travis Pinick came up with the offensive rebound for the Bulldogs. The freshman missed a follow, grabbed his own miss, and wasfouled to get to the line for two free throws with 28 seconds left and Yale up by eight.
Key performance Yale’s Dominick Martin had just his second double-double in 15 games this season with 17 points and 10 rebounds. The big man also had a big dunk late in the game when Columbia had whittled the Bulldogs’ lead to four.
Key statistic Yale’s 10-of-18 three-point shooting. The 10 three-point field goals were a season high for the Bulldogs and the highest single-game total since February 13, 2004 in a win at Dartmouth.
Notes
Both teams were without starters, as Yale power forward Sam Kaplan sat out after sustaining an injury in practice this week. Columbia was without Mack Montgomery, who was nursing a knee injury.
The Jones Brothers now have gone head to head five times. Yale’s win gave James a 4-1 record against Joe.
Yale stormed out of the gates for the second straight game, starting the game with a 16-2 run. The lead would eventually grow to 18 at 27-9 before Columbia went on a 20-4 run to close to within 31-29 with a few minutes left in the first half.
Nwachukwu was the game’s leading scorer with 18 points, and fellow Lion big man John Baumann chipped in 17.
Lions point guard Brett Loscalzo seemed to be back in a shooting slump, going 0-for-4 from the outside and finishing 1 of 7 from the field.
The win improved Yale’s home Ivy League record to 25-7 since the 2001-02 season. The Bulldogs are undefeated in four league games at home this season.
The loss was the 12th in 15 games for Columbia after starting the season 5-0.
