Keys to the Game
Key sequence After Mike Lang’s floater inside the foul line drew Dartmouth to within 46-45 with 12.1 seconds left, the Big Green tried to pressure the inbounds pass. Instead of throwing the ball forward, Scott Greenman tossed it to a teammate behind the baseline and then caught the return pass in front of the Dartmouth bench. Immediately fouled, he made a pair of free throws to make it 48-45. After Mike Giovacchini made one of two free throws to make it 48-46 with 8.2 seconds left, it was Greenman getting fouled and knocking down another pair of free throws for a 50-46 lead — just enough when Giovacchini’s NBA-strength triple from straight out went down with 2.8 seconds to go.
Key sign it was over With 1.9 seconds left, former high school pitcher Brian McMillan threaded a pass 75 feet down the court to Mike Lang about eigh feet outside the arc on the right elbow. Lang did his best to square up for the possible game-tying shot but the rushed attempt was too strong and Princeton escaped with the win.
Key performance Greenman made just 3 of 8 shots from the field, but he was 8-for-8 from the line (including 4-for-4 in the final 11.1 seconds) and 2-for-4 from three-point range. He had three assists and a couple of rebounds.
Key statistic Dartmouth was just 12 of 20 from the foul line while Princeton was going 15-for-19.
Notes
Princeton was 7-for-15 from outside the arc. Dartmouth was 3-for-11.
Kevin Steurer’s basket on a goaltending call against Dartmouth’s Alex Barnett was the only Princeton field goal in the final 9:49 of the first half. Justin Conway’s double-clutch shot over Cal Arnold with 2:47 remaining in the game was the Tigers’ only field goal in the final 10:03 of the second half.
Princeton had just one offensive rebound. Owings grabbed it in the second half and Greenman made it count by burying a three-pointer on the second chance with 17:04 left in the game.
Dartmouth had just three assists in the first half, with none by a starter.
Princeton came into the game 6-0 when scoring 51 or more points and 0-12 when failing to hit 51. The Tigers had 50 (to Dartmouth’s 49) until Owings’s two free throws with 1.9 seconds remaining got them over the magic number.
By holding on to win after leading by as many as 10 points in the second half Princeton avoided a repeat of last year’s “Disaster at Dartmouth,” when the Big Green finished on an 18-1 run to post a win over the Tigers.
A late rush of fans pushed the attendance to 1,311.
