Best of the Week: Week 5

Game of the Week: Harvard over Boston College

Tommy Amaker’s Crimson squad delivered an action-packed sequel to last season’s stunner over Boston College, beating the Eagles 74-67 in Chestnut Hill on Wednesday night to make it two in a row over their city rival. Jeremy Lin led the way with 25 points, but more importantly was able to connect on 5 of 6 free throws in the final minute to ice the game for Harvard.

Harvard went on an impressive second half run, fighting back from four down at the break. The Crimson scored 45 points in the second frame, while holding Boston College to less than 30% shooting from the field. Sophomore big man Keith Wright scored 21, while Harvard continued to get big minutes from their freshman class, with both Christian Webster and and Brandyn Curry seeing over 25 minutes of action.

Player of the Week: Jeremy Lin, Harvard SG

No matter the opponent, this kid can flat-out play. Always a fierce competitor who wants the ball in the final seconds with the game on the line, Lin continued to show that he’s at his best against big-time competition. In back-to-back tilts against UConn and Boston College, Lin scored 30 and 25, respectively, giving Harvard a shot at winning both games.

While his Crimson squad fell just short against UConn, Lin put on a spectacular performance in front of a hostile BC crowd to notch the big upset. Harvard’s senior leader hit 7 of 10 from the field and a clutch 10 of 12 from the charity stripe.

Honorable Mention: Noruwa Agho, Columbia SG

Death, taxes and Noruwa Agho filling up the stat sheet. In what has already become a familiar scene in this young season, Columbia’s top marksman dropped 30 and 23 points in consecutive wins over Wagner and Bryant this past week. Agho is shooting an impressive 55% from the field thus far in 2009.

Rookie of the Week: Ian Hummer, Princeton SF

With a performance that the Tiger faithful have been waiting for, Princeton basketball uber-legacy Ian Hummer had his official coming out party at UNC-Greensboro on Sunday night. The highly-touted freshman, whose father and uncle both starred for Princeton, scored 17 points to lead his squad to a 65-50 victory.
