Keys to the Game
Key sequence After Brown had closed to 15-12 on a Marcus Becker three-pointer with just under seven minutes left in the first half, Ibby Jaaber and Steve Danley each scored seven points as part of an 18-3 Penn run to close the half. When the two teams headed to the locker room at intermission, the Quakers held a 33-15 lead.
Key sign it was over Penn’s Brian Grandieri hit a three-pointer off a fastbreak with just over 12 minutes left. It was the third straight possession on which the Quakers came away with at least three points and gave them a commanding 53-27 lead.
Key performance Birthday boy Ibrahim Jaaber. The junior guard celebrated his 22nd birthday in style, hitting half of his shots from the floor, including 2 of 3 from three-point range, and all six of his free throws, for an efficient 18-point, six-rebound, two-assist, and three-steal performance.
Key statistic Penn’s 9-for-10 performance at the line in the first half. The Quakers only missed one free throw in the first half and finished 19 of 23 from the line — well above their 63.2-percent season average.

Notes
Brown’s season-long three-point shooting woes continued. The Bears’ 5-for-18 performance was just above their 26.6-percent season average from three-point range, the lowest in the Ivy League. Incidentally, Penn is second-lowest at 30.3 percent.

Both teams had shot clock issues in the first half. Brown employed a zone defense for much of the half, and Penn failed to attack it aggressively, resulting in two shot clock violations and several poor shots taken late in the shot clock. At the other end Brown appeared to be milking the clock, and found itself in similar situations with the shot clock running low on a number of occasions.

The Bears’ 15 first-half points were the fewest by a Penn opponent in a half this season. It was the second straight game the Quakers held their opponent under 20 in the first half, after allowing just 17 points to Saint Joseph’s last Saturday.

It was the ninth-straight game Penn has led at halftime. The last time Penn didn’t lead at half was against Villanova, against whom Penn trailed 33-23 back on December 13.

With about a minute and a half to go, both coaches emptied their benches, to an extent. Brown had freshmen Scott Friske, John Kresse, and Chris Skrelja and sophomores Damon Huffman and Mark MacDonald on the court. Penn went with freshmen Aron Cohen, Kevin Egee, Cameron Lewis, and Brennan Votel and senior Adam Franklin. Friske and MacDonald both started for Brown and were the only two among these players to get double-digit minutes in the game.
