Keys to the Game
Key sequence Cornell used a spurt of 10 unanswered points to turn a one-point deficit into a nine-point lead midway through the first half, then blew open the game with a 15-2 run late in the half. Louis Dale keyed the second run, scoring 11 of the Big Red’s 15 points during that span on three three-pointers and a dunk. When the dust settled, Alvernia was down 38-17 and the rout was on.
Key sign it was over Already enjoying a 44-22 lead at intermission, Cornell came out and outscored Alvernia 11-2 to open the second half, going up by 31 on an Andre Wilkins jumper just less than four minutes into the second half. The visitors drew within 29 on a bucket on their next possession, but Jeff Foote’s layup restored the Big Red advantage to 31, and it would stay at or above 30 points the rest of the way.
Key performance Due to the lopsided nature of the game, Dale played only 17 minutes, but yet still scored a game-high 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting — including 3 of 6 from three. The sophomore point guard also grabbed four rebounds and even blocked a pair of shots.
Key statistic Cornell shot very well as a team, knocking down 21 of 35 (60.0 percent) of its two-point attempts and 14 of 28 (50.0 percent) of its three-point attempts.
