Keys to the Game |
Key sequence |
Harvard led 57-56 after Jeremy Lin’s jumper with just under five minutes remaining in the contest, but Ryon Howard put Sacred Heart back in front with a layup 20 seconds later. Evan Harris knotted the game at 58 with a free throw two possessions later, and Lin had a chance to put the Crimson on top, but missed a pair of free throws. Drew Shubik had no such problems, hitting four straight free throws on the Pioneers’ next two possessions, sandwiched around a Pat Magnarelli turnover. Dan McGeary missed a three-pointer and Lin controlled the rebound, but turned it over to Sacred Heart, and Brice Brooks punished the mistake with a three-pointer for a seven-point davantage. Following a missed three by Housman, Luke Granato was perfect on a pair from the line to give the Pioneers a sudden 67-58 lead with 1:12 remaining, following an 11-1 run.

Key sign it was over |
A Harris lay-in drew the Crimson to within seven, but Shubik drained two free throws. Housman couldn’t score inside, and Howard added two at the line for a double-digit lead with 45 ticks left. Alek Blankenau knocked down a three-pointer and was fouled. He missed the free throw, but Magnarelli rebounded to give Harvard a life line. Blankenau was off the mark this time from the outside, and though Harvard got the ball back out of bounds, Housman couldn’t find the range on a three-pointer, and Shubik all but put the game away with two free throws with just 24 seconds remaining.

Key performance |
Shubik led all scorers with 20 points, largely thanks to a 13-for-14 night at the free throw line. He did commit seven turnovers, though six assists and four rebounds helped make up for this.

Key statistic |
The game was essentially even with the exception of free throws. Sacred Heart attempted 28 free throws to 19 for Harvard, and outscored the Crimson 25-11 from the stripe. In the second half alone, the Pioneers were 21 of 23 on free throws, including a perfect 14 of 14 in the final three minutes.
