Keys to the Game
Key sequence Harvard led 52-49 with under 13 minutes to play, but Northeastern would put together a crucial 12-1 run to build up a decent cushion again. Nkem Ojougboh drew the hosts within one with a dunk, then after a missed Crimson three-point attempt, Ojougboh struck again inside to put Northeastern on top for good. Pat Magnarelli turned over the ball, then compounded his mistake with a foul at the other end. Eugene Spates hit one of two at the line, and after Jeremy Lin was off the mark on a three, Spates connected from beyond the arc to give the Huskies a five-point advantage. Magnarelli’s free throw temporarily halted the Northeastern run, but Matt Janning hit a jumper to make it a six-point gme, then Chaisson Allen came up with a steal at Magnarelli’s expense and laid it in to make it 61-53 with exactly nine minutes to play.
Key sign it was over The Crimson still trailed by eight until Drew Housman sank a jumper with 65 ticks left to bring Harvard within 74-68. Northeastern milked the shot clock under eight seconds before Lin fouled Ojougboh, who did the Crimson a big favor by missing both free throws. At the other end, Dan McGeary drilled a three-pointer to make it a one-possession game. Janning was fouled and hit both free throws, but Lin canceled out those points with a layup. Baptiste Bataille was fouled with four seconds remaining, and complied by missing both attempts from the line. Harvard got the rebound, but McGeary couldn’t get off the potential game-tying three-pointer at the buzzer and the Crimson lost its fifth-straight contest.
Key performance Manny Adako was the game’s top scorer with 19 points on 8-for-12 shooting, and also added six rebounds and a pair of assists in 30 minutes.
Key statistic Northeastern attempted 27 free throws to Harvard’s 13, and outscored the Crimson 19-10 from the line.
Notes

– Five Harvard players scored in double figures, with Housman leading the way with 16 points and five assists.

– Ojougboh proved to be tough for the Crimson to contain inside, finishing with 14 points largely on the strength of 8-for-12 free throw shooting and adding nine rebounds.

– Harvard shot the ball incredibly well, knocking down 29 of 49 attempts from the floor for a smoldering 59.2 percent on the night.

– The Crimson took good care of the ball, committing just 12 turnovers, but the Huskies were even betting with just six turnovers.

– Harvard will try to put its losing streak behind it when it travels to southeast Connecticut on Saturday, December 22, to take on Sacred Heart in a noon start.
