Keys to the Game
Key sequence Nick Deltufo’s layup shaved Penn’s lead to a single point with 3:43 remaining, but Aron Cohen hit a big three-pointer at the other end. Monmouth grabbed its own miss, only for Jhamar Youngblood to be whistled for an offensive foul, giving the ball back to the Quakers. Tyler Bernardini’s jumper was off the mark, but Jack Eggleston came up with the offensive rebound and was fouled, hitting both free throws. Alex Nunner then missed the front end of a one-and-one, and Brian Grandieri got loose inside for a layup. Whitney Coleman misfired, and Justin Reilley controlled the carom and was fouled, hitting one of two at the line. When Grandieri came up with the rebound of Younblood’s miss and converted both free throws, it finished off a run of 10 straight points for the Quakers, who suddenly led by 11 with 49 ticks left.
Key sign it was over Penn had an answer for every Monmouth bucket in the final minute, hitting 7 of 8 free throws in that span. Eggleston’s two free throws with 16 seconds left put the Quakers up by nine and made it all but impossible for the Hawks to win.
Key performance Grandieri picked apart the Monmouth defense, putting up a game-best 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting. The senior wing also added four rebounds and three assists in 32 minutes.
