Keys to the Game
Key sequence Yale led by five with under two minutes to play in overtime after Ross Morin went glass, but Greg Nero answered with a conventional three-point play to make it a two-point game. Alex Zampier gave the ball back to Fairfield, and Jon Han took advantage with a game-tying layup. However, Anthony Johnson fouled Eric Flato, who made both free throws to put the Bulldogs back in front by two with 1:05 remaining. Zampier then atoned for his earlier mistake by coming up with a steal with 44 ticks on the clock. A wild sequence took place in the final 15 seconds, with Caleb Holmes throwing it away, only for Zampier to pick off a Fairfield pass going the other direction, as the Stags fouled Flato.
Key sign it was over With his team up two and four seconds on the clock, Flato stepped to the line and coolly drained both free throws, rendering Han’s three-point attempt at the buzzer utterly meaningless, as Yale snapped a five-game losing streak in dramatic fashion.
Key performance With Flato, Morin, and Matt Kyle all in serious foul trouble, Zampier led a gutty effort by the Yale reserves to keep their team in the game. Zampier finished with 14 points on 6-for-9 shooting, and added a pair of assists and four steals in 28 minutes. The Bulldogs’ bench outscored their Stag counterparts 26-9.
Key statistic Fairfield hurt itself severely with a 13-for-26 performance at the line. Despite taking six fewer free throws, Yale was able to match the Stags in scoring at the stripe with 13 points.
